Icarus Project: Visits to Experimental Fields

The demonstrative visits of ICARUS have begun. The first appointment on March 23, 2023, took place directly in the field at Cericola S.r.l. in Ordona (Fg). The meeting focused on the topic of innovative agronomic strategies for sustainable artichoke cultivation.

Funded under the Puglia Rural Development Program 2014-2020 - Measure 16.2 "Support for pilot projects and the development of new products, practices, processes, and technologies" for an amount of €482,945.60, the ICARUS project aims to improve the overall competitiveness of the artichoke supply chain in Puglia by strengthening various aspects:

  • Defining innovative and environmentally friendly technical management protocols for artichoke cultivation, based on efficient fertilization and irrigation practices.
  • Revision of the variety range to include the recovery of local varieties.
  • Optimization and sustainable management of mineral nutrition and irrigation through the use of decision support systems.
  • Optimization and development of new processes for high-value-added products.
  • Recovery of bioactive compounds from processing waste for the development of new feed and pharmaceutical products.
  • Market strategies for the new products.

Techniques compared

During the visit to the experimental fields implemented as part of the project, traditional mineral nutrition and irrigation management were compared with "innovative" management. It was an opportunity to learn about the ongoing Research and Development activities.

The ICARUS partnership carrying out the project consists of:
